ISOLEPIS
cernua (Fiber Optic Grass) $4.95 qt Full sun to part shade / Zones 8 - 10
This moisture loving little grass is all the rage. Gardeners are drawn by
the sparkling green, fine blades, and the curious, tiny white flowers resembling
a fiber optic. Too cool, and perfect in bird bath plantings and container
gardens. Height 8 inches.
MELINUS
nerviglumis 'Pink Crystals' $4.95 qt Full sun / Zones 9 - 10
It's easy to adore this beautiful, annual African grass. The fine powdery-blue
leaf blades look dreamy contrasted by the summer and fall appearing deep
pink plumes, like 'foxtails'. This little grass is all the rage with garden
designers, and lovely in containers, too. A Plants of Merit selection (plantsofmerit.org)
from the Missouri Botanical Garden.Height 15 - 18 inches.
MUHLENBERGIA dumosus (Bamboo Muhly) $11.95 2-qt Full sun / Zones 8 - 10
The Big Green Cloud Machine. That's what I call this Southwestern U.S. muhly
grass. Awesome in containers, where it towers high into the air, offering
an incredible fine mass of arching, wispy green culms, like bamboo. Not
invasive. Height 4 - 6 feet.
PENNISETUM (Fountain Grass)
For summertime, knock'em dead container and garden art, you need these wildly
popular grasses. Due to agricultural restrictions, we cannot ship pennisetum
to the following states: California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah,
and Washington
Pennisetum glaucum 'Jester' (Purple Millet Grass) $4.95 qt Zones 8 -
10
This slightly shorter version of P. glaucum looks irresistible to me, with
a more full habit than 'Purple Majesty'. The wide leaves unfurl in bright
chartreuse tones, and in full sun, mature to deep purple.
Pennisetum purpureum 'Prince' Full sun / Zones 8 - 10
Just when I think I've seen it all, along comes an amazing new group of
plants. This time, a truly exotic pair of tropical grasses.P. purpureum,
or Elephant grass, as it is known in its Southeast Asian haunts, is being
jointly released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the University
of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and Athens
Select. With deep purple blades similar to my beloved purple fountain grass,
the difference lies in the length of the leaf blade and width, with 'Prince'
appearing to be a giant on steroids , with more upright blades and dense
growth, achieving a height of 5 to 6 feet. It's a lush, dramatic look---a
perfect marriage of texture, architecture and color---perfect for use as
a background in garden beds and titillating tropicalismo vignettes. 'Prince'
and 'Princess' are vigorous annuals in northern zones with warm summers,
where seed will not be produced due to early freezes. For this reason, we
cannot ship 'Prince' and 'Princess' to the warmer zones of USDA Zones 8
- 10 , or the following states: California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Texas,
Utah and Washington states.
Pennisetum purpureum 'Princess' Full sun / Zones 8 - 10
Pennisetum setaceum rubrum (PURPLE FOUNTAIN GRASS) $4.95 qt Zones
9 - 10
Tight clumps of coppery-red blades, deeply saturated with color, are beautiful
even without the fluffy pink plumes that arise throughout summer. Height
4 feet.
POGONATHERUM crinitum Variegated (Bamboo Grass) $4.95 qt
Full sun to part shade / Zones 8 - 10
Last summer I found myself standing and admiring this sweet little annual
grass, happy with the knowledge that I would have plenty to offer you this
spring. The narrow blades of Bamboo Grass spring from dwarf, clumping (not
running!) mounds
.a miniature bamboo look-alike that shimmers in the
morning dew, a magical effect. As an underplanting to bold tropicals like
Crinum 'Queen Emma', or colorful companion 'weavers' like alternanthera,
it's a more perfect contrast plant than I could have ever imagined. The
frilly mantle of arching, delicate green and cream blades say 'touch me',
an enchanting scene coveted by any gardener--- tropicholic or not. Give
this heat loving Asian native a moist, but well drained soil amended with
compost. Great for containers, too! Height 8 inches.
