The BIG Ones

Quality is what our container grown hosta are all about. When you receive your order you will note the healthy large crown, well developed root systems (no tiny starts in 3 inch pots!) expertly packed and ready for vigorous growth in your garden. Our inventory is one of the largest in the greater St. Louis area, with top new cultivars and treasured older types. Bill and I work hard to provide you with the quality you will come to expect from us, and will settle for nothing less.

These are large to very large hosta, making grand specimens and eye-popping, jumbo-leaved focal points adding structure and drama to your shady areas. Grown in soil richly endowed with organic matter, and with regular irrigation during dry weather, many of these hosta will grow up to six feet across!

As asterisk * indicates hostas that have sun tolerance (morning sun preferred in hot summer climates) with sufficient irrigation during dry spells being key for best results.

BIG DADDY $11.95 2-qt Zones 3 - 8 This big guy is quickly becoming a hosta classic. Regarded as one of the best big blues, an H. sieboldiana type, it makes an imposing background plant. When visitors ask for a 'big blue hosta' we show them 'Big Daddy'. 4 to 5 feet wide.

DAWN'S EARLY LIGHT $24.95 2-qt Zones 3 - 8 Pure, intense drama in springtime, that's how this new hosta has been described. The heart shaped leaves are an astonishing lemon-yellow, wonderfully ruffled and corrugated, on clumps spreading to 3 feet across. A fast growing golden 'Tokudama' hybrid.

ELVIS LIVES $6.95 qt Zones 3 - 8 Here's a twist in blue-leaved hosta that you'll shout about. 'Elvis' has unique, wavy, narrow and tapered leaves unlike most other hosta of this leaf color. This heartbreaker grows rapidly into clumps spreading to 60" across. Stalks of lavender flowers in mid summer.

*FRIED BANANAS $7.95 qt Zones 3 - 9 Glossy gold leaves grace this plant which quickly forms a large mound. Large fragrant white flowers occur in August. Sun tolerant.

*FRIED GREEN TOMATOES $6.95 qt Zones 3 - 9 This 'pumped up' hosta reminds me of the classic 'Royal Standard' on steroids. Bigger, more substantial green leaves have a powdery sheen on a plant growing to 5 feet wide. The buds are large, pale lavender and spring open into white trumpets…thick with perfume for you, and nectar for hungry hummingbirds. A great hosta with H. plantaginea parentage.

FROSTED JADE $7.95 qt Zones 3 - 8 A very large clump of frosted green leaves with narrow, very bright white margins. A Hosta montana hybrid with funnel-shaped white flowers in June that are sweetly fragrant. 4 feet across

*GLORY $7.95 qt Zones 3 - 8 Such a beautiful name for a deserving hosta. These are very stunning heart-shaped leaves that are bright yellow, spreading on clumps 4 - 5 feet across. The deep lavender flowers are a great contrast.

GOLDEN SCULPTURE $19.95 GL Zones 3 - 8 I have had this spectacular hosta in a large container for a number of years. Visitors to our shade hut go bonkers when they see it and usually end up toting a container of 'Golden Sculpture' home with them. To see it is to want it. This very impressive hosta morphs into a 6 foot wide mound of corrugated golden leaves that positively glows. Be still my beating heart!

GRAND CANYON $14.95 qt Zones 3 - 9 It took two fabulous hybrids to create this hot new Olga Petryszyn introduction. Bred from' Sum and Substance', a monolith of chartreuse leaves, 'Grand Canyon' develops into a huge, rather fast growing mound of glowing chartreuse color. From its other parent, Montana var. macrophylla, 'Grand Canyon' has inherited lovely pleated and ruffle-margined leaves. A winner with a distinct look!

GUARDIAN ANGEL $23.95 GL Zones 3 - 8 Not many center- variegated hosta develop into jumbo size, like 'Guardian Angel' will. This is serious excitement….the large blue-green leaves are ruffled and folded, and centered with a grayish-ivory variegated pattern that is most intense in spring. This wonderful hosta is capable of reaching a width of 6 feet across, given humus- rich soil and a bright spot, perhaps in morning sun. What an angel!

GUNSMOKE $22.95 GL Zones 3 - 8 This amazing and vigorous new hybrid of Hosta 'Sagae' and 'Blue Umbrellas' produces a huge mound of shiny, metallic blue, rounded leaves on clumps spreading to 65 inches across.

*HOOSIER DOME $18.95 GL Zones 3 - 9 This is another lovely Olga Petryszyn hybrid with massive, pleated dark green leaves that arch downward and are edged with beautiful ruffles. This hosta creates a perfect huge dome of standout foliage, up to 50 inches across, topped in pale lavender flower spikes in early summer.

INNISWOOD $17.95 2-GL Zones 3 - 9 A real beauty. Stunning mounds of puckered, heart-shaped, chartreuse to gold leaves are margined in blue-green. This has been a steady favorite in our hosta hut for many years. Grows 3-4 feet across.

NEW! KOMODO DRAGON $23.95 2-qt Zones 3 - 8 This massive hosta can morph to seven feet across given optimum growing conditions! The large heart-shaped gray-green leaves are heavily veined with a rippled edge.

LAURA AND DARRELL $18.95 GL Zones 3 - 8 A hard-to-find and beautiful sport of Hosta 'Zounds'. The heavily corrugated leaves are dark green edged in gold margins that morph into 6 foot wide clumps.

'MISSISSIPPI DELTA' $22.95 GL If you take your hosta big and blue, you'll want 'Mississippi Delta'. The large, deeply veined blue-gray leaves are displayed horizontally, and appear to float in the air. Massive clumps spread to five feet across.

*MISS SAIGON $24.95 2-qt Zones 3 - 9 This is a moderately large hosta with LARGE dark green, deeply impressed leaves margined in white. A bouquet of large and fragrant white flowers appear on 30 inch stalks in August…..they are sweetly intoxicating, creating hummingbird runways. A hybrid of H. plantaginea growing 3-4 feet across.

MISS TOKYO $7.95 qt Zones 3 - 8 Of all of Hideko Gowen's stunning hosta introductions, 'Miss Tokyo' is the largest and most majestic. Huge heart-shaped, deeply veined leaves are edged with a wide creamy white margin. Pale lavender flowers in early summer.

MOUNT TOM $22.95 2-qt Zones 3 - 9 Of all the many fine hostas Eleanor Lachman introduced, 'Mount Tom' would be at the top of the list. The intense blue leaves have a wide creamy-white margin. Pale lavender flowers appear in early summer. A classy hosta, sure to become a favorite. Grows 40 inches across.

MR. BIG $14.95 GL Zones 3 - 8
An H. sieboldiana and H. montana cross, a mammoth that clumps upwards to 5-6 feet across. Huge, blue-green leaves are seer suckered and have great substance. Magnifique!

*OLD FAITHFUL $24.95 2-qt Zones 3 - 9 This is a wonderful hybrid of the Old August Lily hosta, H. plantaginea, bringing with it a moderate sun tolerance and large and wonderful fragrant white flowers in midsummer. From its other parent, 'Regal Rhubarb', it has inherited dark purple petioles that merge into the large, deep green, and corrugated leaves. A stunning combination of foliage and flowers on vigorous clumps.

PARADIGM $14.95 2-qt Zones 3 - 8 Beautiful seersuckered, gold leaves are edged with a blue-green margin. The variegation that intensifies later in the spring producing lush clumps wild with color and texture.

*PARADISE POWER $19.95 2-qt Zones 3 - 8 I dearly love hosta 'Sun Power', so when a variegated form came up, I sat up and took notice. 'Paradise Power' has the same large golden, pointed leaves of its parent, with a new twist….each bright gold leaf is edged in a narrow green margin. The large clumps spread into a distinct, vase-shaped clump, say, 3 feet wide

PINEAPPLE UPSIDE DOWN CAKE $9.95 qt Zones 3 - 8 This eye-popping hybrid of H. sieboldiana and H. lancifolia is a fast growing mound of brightly variegated, narrow, rippled foliage. The leaves emerge in spring green and quickly change to a stunning bright gold with rippled margins. This is a ruffly, different look in a hosta growing to 50 inches across.

*POTOMAC PRIDE $7.95 qt Zones 3 - 8 Glossy, deepest green leaves of heavy substance and unique clusters of spidery lavender flowers in midsummer. The vigorous mounds spread to 4 feet across.

NEW! POWDER BLUE $19.95 qt Zones 3 - 8 A huge, broad mound of slug resistant, powdery blue leaves with heavy corrugation. Clumps spread to 60 inches across.

NEW! QUEEN OF THE SEAS $24.95 2-qt Zones 3 - 8 Introduced by legendary hosta hybridizer Mildred Seaver, this lovely hosta features glaucous blue, pointed heart-shaped leaves with a piecrust margin. It's a unique look in large, blue-leaved hosta on clumps spreading to 60 inches across.

*ROSEDALE GOLDEN GOOSE $24.95 GL Zones 3 - 8 Irresistable name, irresistible hosta. Hybridizer Jerry Hadrava reports that this is an outstanding large plant with golden, puckered leaves and good sun tolerance. Lavender flowers in July on 32 inch tall scapes, growing 5 feet wide. We love the name.

*ROSEDALE TRACTOR SEAT $24.95 GL Zones 3 - 8 The thick-textured, individual leaves of this newer hybrid can be used as replacement parts on a John Deere tractor….huummm. I suggest you only grow it for the marvelous clump of humongous, cupped green leaves it becomes. Near white flowers in July on a plant growing to 5 feet across.

SATISFACTION $9.95 qt Zones 3 - 8
A very handsome hosta, bred from 'Piedmont Gold' with large, pointed leaves of deep green, irregularly and brazenly bordered gold. While this description may sound typical of a good number of hosta, the stunning good looks of 'Satisfaction' must be seen to be appreciated. Near white flowers top the 4 foot clumps in midsummer.

SEPTEMBER SUN $12.95 GL Zones 3 - 8 This Bob Solberg introduction is a sport developed from 'August Moon', with the same, glowing golden seer-suckered leaves, and an added attraction of wide, deep green borders. Spreads 4 feet across.

*SLICK WILLIE $9.95 qt Zones 3 - 9 This is a notable seedling from H. 'Invincible' and H. ventricosa. The large, darkest green, smooth leaves appear to be waxed and morph into impressive mounds 3 to 4 feet wide.

NEW! SOLAR FLARE $24.95 GL Zones 3 - 8 The granddaddy of large, chartreuse-leaved hosta. Spectacular large leaves are chartreuse early, bright gold by midsummer with a slightly rippled margin. Monster clumps to 80 inches wide.

*STAINED GLASS $9.95 qt Zones 3 - 9 This hosta has superb coloration, on large heart-shaped leaves that slightly arch downward, forming magnificent clumps 3-4 feet across. The brilliant gold-centered leaves of this vigorous plant are bolding edged in a two inch deep green border. This is a vast improvement from its parent plant 'Guacamole'.

*SUM AND SUBSTANCE $11.95 GL Zones 3 - 9 If you have room for this hosta giant it is imperative to grow….simply outstanding! A massive plant with huge chartreuse leaves of thick substance, eventually growing up to 6-7 feet across. For impressive results, apply copious amounts of rotted organic matter and water deeply during dry periods. The leaves are more gold in sun, more chartreuse in light shade. In sunnier situations, irrigate more regularly.The Master of the Universe!

*SUNPOWER $11.95 GL Zones 3 - 8  Classy and classic, a golden goddess with ribbed, pointed leaves in a vase- shaped clump. An older hybrid, still hard to beat. Spreads to 3 feet wide.

TITANIC $24.95 2-qt Zones 3 - 8  Massive! This is the best of the variegated leaf forms from the monster 'Sum and Substance' that I have seen. The giant, ribbed leaves are glossy and chartreuse-green, widely bordered in gold. Plant this where you have the space…..this fella can grow to widths up to 6-7 feet !

*VIM AND VIGOR $23.95 GL Zones 3 - 8 (possibly 9) Vim and Vigor' is THE hosta to grow if you're looking for a massive background, green- leaved giant. Bred from 'Sum and Substance', with, perhaps a more vigorous habit, each huge leaf emerges in spring dusted with a light waxy bloom that gives it a blue-green effect. As the leaves age, the wax flattens producing a very shiny surface. Cowabunga!! Spreads 5-6 feet wide…we suggest a load of compost to coax this baby!!

WOOLLY MAMMOTH $24.95 GL Zones 3 - 7 What an intriguing name…this dinosaur- sized new introduction is an outstanding gold-edged sport of the famous giant 'Blue Mammoth', growing up to 5 ' wide. Unusual and most impressive!

*ZOUNDS $14.95 2-qt Zones 3 - 8 I have seen impressive mounds of this famous cultivar that make me swoon. Gold leaved hosta just don't come any better than this. The heart-shaped, puckered leaves spread on clumps up to 4 feet across.
