ALLIUM (Ornamental Onion)
Full sun to part shade/
Deer resistant /         Butterfly Attractor
 Allium tanguticum 'Summer Beauty'
  (Lavender Globe Lily)   $5.95 qt
For most of my 30 years of gardening, alliums have remained a perennial favorite. The neat clumps of strap-like leaves are tough and durable, never failing to survive our harsh winters or steamy, hot summers, and go unnoticed by deer and rabbits. The flowers are born on umbels, perched on sturdy stems that never flop, and provide an interesting vertical element in borders. Blooms of 'Summer Beauty', appearing in June, are brightly colored rosy violet. Being sterile, they produce no unwanted seedlings, and therefore continue to bloom longer. Lovely under-planted with lower, spreading perennials like Origanum 'Norton's Gold' (golden oregano). Height 22 inches. USDA  Zones 4 – 7
Allium thunbergii ‘Ozawa’ $5.95 qt   A charmer with delicate, dark green, very narrow leaves forming fine clumps. ARTEMISIA (Wormwood)
Full sun /

I've learned to restrain myself with this clan--- their silvery, wooly foliage doesn't always cotton to hot, steamy weather, and they can be garden thugs set on totalitarian rule. The following are two of the best for hot and muggy summer climates.

Those of us who lust for lupines, but are unable to grow them in hot, muggy summers, happily settle for the native baptisias, or false indigos. Their erect spikes of pea-like flowers that appear in late spring closely resemble those of lupine, and cover the lusty, shrub-like growth that emerges in spring like fat asparagus shoots. Baptisias love rich, deep soils, although they are tolerant of poorer soils, albeit well drained.

Here is a most distinctive, intriguing version of the popular perennial Blue Mist Shrub. Definitely appealing to devotees of variegated leaves, this Japanese import is a dense 2 - 3 foot mound of small, fuzzy, spring green leaves, widely swathed in white margins. Really neat! The wispy flowers appear in autumn, with charming petals like 'blue curls'. In its northernmost Zones (6 and 7), expect 'Snow Fairy' to die to the ground in winter, slowly emerging in spring. In Zones 8 and 9 it will behave as a shrub, but benefits from being cut back annually, supplying a fresh flush of lovely foliage and flowers. Eupatorium greggii (Gregg's Blue Mist Flower) $5.19 qt    Several years ago, on an October dream trip to Plant Delights Nursery in Raleigh, NC, I spied this lovely plant in Tony Avent's patio garden. Resembling what we northerners grow as annual ageratum, Gregg's Blue Mist flower was covered in clusters of lovely powder blue flowers. The low, soft mounds made for an exceptional garden plant, and the nectar-rich flowers are considered premier plant material for attracting butterflies of all kinds. Tony says 'this amazing Texas native should be grown in every garden form Zone 7 south, and in containers from Zone 7 north.' I tucked mine in a bed beneath our purple gazebo, where it companions with blue and purple-hued tropicals, and chartreuse-leaved hosta. And, surprise, Gregg's Blue Mist flower returns every spring for me (not vigorously, mind you) here in my Zone 5b gardens. Lovely in the autumn garden planted with Gaura lindheimeri. This rhizomatous perennial prefers full sun in its northernmost range, and succeeds quite well in more shaded sites further south. Height 18 - 24 inches. Deer resistant. USDA Zones 5b - 10.

EUPHORBIA (Spurge)

Great foliage interest in this genus, the euphorbs always fascinate. We offer some of the more winter hardy species, and grow them as specimen plants or groundcover. They never fail to intrigue visiting gardeners. The following require well drained soil of average fertility.
Euphorbia cyparissias 'Fen's Ruby' $8.95 2-qt   Finely divided thread- like leaves form ground hugging mounds that may run amok in rich, well drained soils, but are more restrained in heavier soils. Beautiful bronze foliage emerges in spring, capped with typical yellow 'blooms' botanically known as cyathium. Great for bank plantings and ground covers. Full sun or part shade. USDA Zones 6 - 8.
Euphorbia dulcis 'Chameleon' $8.95 2-qt   A beauty of bronzy-purple succulent leaves, morphing into tight, near perfect, 15 inch mounds, typically lit with yellow cyathium 'blooms' in spring. Benefits from light shade in hot summer climates, otherwise, full sun. A Great rock garden plant, or for edging perennial beds. USDA Zones 5 - 7.
Eu
phorbia ‘Helena’s Blush’ $9.95 2-qt     Since Euphorbia ‘Efanthia’ has proven it’s performance in our lower Midwest climate, I was immediately drawn to its variegated sister, ‘Helena’s Blush’.  The very compact clumps of gold margined foliage are crowned with yellow cyathium in spring, quite an eye catching display. Use ‘Helena’s Blush’ in border foregrounds or rockery, in well drained soil. USDA Zones 6 – 8.
Euphorbia palustris $7.95 2-qt    Widely admired in our April garden, where this robust giant quickly morphs into a three foot mound. The bright yellow cyathium blaze like beacons to early rising honeybees, lured by the musky sweet fragrance that we enjoy, too. Adaptable to wet sites.

They come in droves, lavender devotees determined to grow that sweetly scented shrub--- usually after their English lavender has languished in our hot, steamy summers, or disappeared entirely in our frigid Midwestern winters. These same gardeners now rave about Lavender 'Grosso'…a hybrid of L. latifolia and L. augustifolia. Borrowing the best qualities from each parent, 'Grosso' is more rot resistant and vigorous, with deep violet flowers that are extremely fragrant. More cold hardy than our previously grown L. intermedia 'Provence'. Height 24-30 inches.
