I asked the Grow Native! people and they told me good drainage is paramount to growing S. regia--- where in nature it springs from rocky open woods and prairies of average to loamy soil. The cultivar 'Prairie Fire' is a natural tetraploid selected by native plant nurseryman Neil Dibol of Prairie Nursery fame.  Height 3 - 4 feet

VERONICA (Speedwell)
Full sun to part sun /
Deer resistant  /  Butterfly and Hummingbird attractor
I have discarded many a veronica in my long gardening career. Some of the worst are floppers, diving to the ground at the height of bloom in an impersonation of Greg Louganis.  Then there are those with yucky foliage, tainted by foliar disease by midsummer. Most prefer full sun, but adapt well to partial shade, and make great groundcovers for small areas or for edging perennial borders. I plan on keeping the following winners in my veronica repertoire and I know you'll love them too. Full sun to light shade.

Veronica spicata 'Royal Candles' $5.49 qt  USDA Zones 3 - 8   Dense, disease resistant mounds, thickly clustered with violet blue spikes, like fat 'candles'. A great improvement over older cultivars of Veronica spicata. Height 18 inches
