BUDDLEIA davidii (BUTTERFLY
BUSH)
Full sun to light shade / Zones 5 – 9 / Deer resistant / Butterfly Attractor
I have never believed in tinkering with Mother Nature and her brood,
but I make an exception with the new buddleia hybrids taking center stage.
This is a case of 'more is better', 'more' meaning more petals and 'better'--
even larger trusses of bloom. Dense compact foliage is the perfect background
for the extravagant floral show. Butterfly bush should be cut back close to
the ground in late winter. This encourages a more compact habit, with more
flower panicles. Remove faded blooms to encourage rebloom throughout summer.
Our very favorites follow………

My friend
, Violette King, has an experimental bed of big leaf hydrangeas in her large

her Zone 5b (6) garden, her answer is inevitably ‘Preziosa’. Placed in an
eastern exposure, this close relative of H. macrophylla has out-performed
all others, reliably covered in mop head (and sometimes lace cap) blooms in
dreamy shades of pink and deep rose every summer. In late summer, the foliage
of ‘Preziosa’ is a superb deep red color. Our best selling big leaf hydrangeas.

LAGERSTROEMIA (Crape Myrtle) Got crape myrtles? You should have! We offer
hybrids bred for more northern climates like ours (Zone 5b - 6), with improved
hardiness and disease resistance, including the Indian Tribe group bred by
the National Arboretum. These are considered vast improvements over older
cultivars offering blooms for most of the summer season. Those listed below
have been grown successfully in trial beds here at our nursery (Zone 5b) and
at the Kemper Center for Home Gardening at Missouri Botanical Garden in St.
Louis (Zone 6).
Culture
of Crape Myrtle: Crape myrtles prefer fertile soils that are well drained, and
will bloom longer and more abundantly when irrigated during dry spells in
summer. They love a hot and sunny exposure. In southern climates (Zones 7-
9), crape myrtles need little pruning.
In the north, (Zones 5b and 6), plants rarely develop into the beautiful tree-like
specimens that are a hallmark of southern gardens, and should be cut back
to the ground in early spring. These plants will grow back rapidly at the
onset of hot weather, and bloom the same year. Please note HEIGHTS
listed below are for crape myrtles grown in Zones 5b and 6, that have been
cut back in early spring.
CRAPE MYRTLE 'ACOMA' $18.95 2-GL
Full sun / Zones 5b - 9
On a visit to the St. Louis Zoo one summer day, I was astonished when I came

with great resistance to powdery mildew. Semi dwarf habit to 4 to 5 feet. Widely regarded as the best white
crape myrtle, and an obvious pick for more northern zones. Awarded Plants
of Merit status for 2007 by the Missouri Botanical Garden (plantsofmerit.org).

clothed in hot pink blossoms. We have grown this in our steamy parking lot

on gracefully arching branches. Handsome throughout three seasons, 'Gibraltar'
is considered the finest of the Japanese Bush Clovers, in perfect harmony
with ornamental grasses and fall blooming asters. Cut lespedeza to the ground

feet tall.
SPIRAEA japonica 'GOLDEN ELF' $11.95 GL
Full sun to light shade / Zones 3 – 8 / Deer resistant
I can't say enough about this adorable dwarf spiraea. 'Golden Elf'
is a choice rock garden subject or edging plant with tiny golden leaves that
do not (REALLY!) burn in the heat of summer. The petite mounds, spreading
to two feet across, literally glow in the garden, holding their illuminating
hue throughout summer and fall. In my Zone 5 b garden, 'Golden Elf' rarely
blooms and I like this trait….it resembles a golden leaved thyme, minus the
meltdown problems that occur in our oppressive summer heat and humidity. AND,
no raggedy seed heads in late summer, like other Japanese Spiraea. Everyone
has a place in their garden for 'Golden Elf'! Height 8 - 10 inches.
SYMPHORICARPOS x chenaultii 'HANCOCK' (Coralberry) $16.95
1.5 GL
Full sun to part shade / Zones 4 – 7 / Deer resistant
This special plant was brought to my attention by plantswoman June
Hutson of the Missouri Botanical Garden. A 2005 Plants of Merit selection,
(www.plantsofmerit.org),
it rates high on the list of deciduous shrubs that are ideal for cold winters
and muggy, hot summers. This Coralberry also rates the best resistance to
powdery mildew, too. The dainty pink flowers that appear in midsummer, up
and down the stems, are loved by butterflies and hummers and give way to colorful
pinkish-coral berries that glow, persisting into early winter. Grow Hancock
Coralberry in full sun to part shade. It adapts easily to many soil types
that are well drained. Birds love the berries. Height 18-24 inches. Spread
24 inches.
